A referendum was held in Sikkim to determine the will of the Sikkimese people. It is important to note that at the time of independence Nepali Hindus formed the majority of the population ruled by a Buddhist monarchy. Yet, Sikkim rejected joining the Indian Union, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru agreed to a special protectorate status for Sikkim. Sikkim came under the suzerainty of India, which controlled its external affairs, defence, diplomacy and communications, but Sikkim otherwise retained administrative autonomy.<br />

At the same time, Sikkim State Congress was founded in 1947 to promote democracy and to end feudalism in Sikkim but its main purpose was to work closely with the Indian National Congress (INC) to successfully achieve the annexation of Sikkim to India. Similarly, Nepal State Congress and Bhutan State Congress were also formed.<br />

६ माघ, काठमाडौं । सोमबारको वार्तापछि बिच्किएको मधेसी मोर्चालाई सहमतिमा ल्याउने अन्तिम प्रयास सुरु भएको छ । केही दिनका लागि संविधान संशोधन प्रक्रिया रोकिएपछि तीन दल आन्तरिक छलफलमा जुटेका छन् भने मधेसी मोर्चाका नेताहरुसँग अनौपचारिक सम्वाद भइरहेको छ ।सहमतिको प्रयासमा आज ३ बजे प्रमुख तीन दलका शीर्ष नेताको बैठक बोलाइएको छ । त्यसअघि दलहरुको दुई पक्षीय छलफल हुनेछ ।एक नेताका अनुसार आज र भोलि सहमतिका लागि अन्तिम प्रयास हुनेछ । उनले भने, निकै जोडबलका साथ संविधान संशोधन प्रक्रिया केही दिनका लागि रोकिएको छ र, सहमतिका लागि हामी प्रयास गरिरहेका छौं ।’स्रोतका अनुसार मधेसी मोर्चाले अघि सारेको छबुँदे प्रस्तावलाई आधार बनाएर सहमति खोज्न एमाओवादीले पहल गरिरहेको छ । प्रमुख विपक्षी नेपाली कांग्रेस पनि यसमा सकारात्मक छ । तर, वरिष्ठ नेता शेरबहादुर देउवा पक्षका कारण कांग्रेसभित्र एकमत देखिएको छैन् ।सरकारको नेतृत्व गरिरहेको नेकपा एमाले भने सकारात्मक देखिएको छैन् । मधेसी मोर्चाले एकपछि अर्को नयाँ माग ल्याएको र सहमति नै गर्न नचाहेको प्रधानमन्त्री केपी शर्मा ओली र एमाले नेतृत्वको निष्कर्ष देखिन्छ । वार्ता प्रक्रियामा संलग्न नेताहरुका अनुसार धेरै कुरा मिले पनि सहमति त्यति सजिलो छैन् ।नभए संविधान संशोधनबाट सम्बोधन</div>
